al-Rāwī al-Raqamī (الراوي الرقمي), the Digital Rāwī, is a research environment for Arabic philology: a growing collection of digital editions, dictionaries and tools for reading, studying and teaching the premodern Arabic textual heritage. The environment takes its name from the rāwī — or rāwiya, as the great transmitters were called — of the classical tradition, who preserved, recited and transmitted poems together with the accounts that went with them.
The Rāwī contains four sections. I. Digital Editions: fully vocalized and glossed texts, among them the Thousand and One Nights in the Calcutta II text and Kitāb al-aghānī. II. Research Tools: a full-text searchable library of more than 5,700 premodern Arabic works, and experimental tools for machine-coded searches. III. Dictionaries: Lane, Lisān al-ʿArab, and Hava — searchable as standalone apps, and present as a background layer behind every text of the environment. IV. Teaching Tools: Arabic Prosody: Principles & Scanner with its scansion drills, a multi-layered tool for teaching poetry, and more. The sections are built to work together: every verse can be scanned, every passage can be searched and cited.
The environment serves scholars of Arabic and Middle Eastern studies who work with premodern Arabic texts, teachers and students of Arabic at advanced levels, and general readers of Arabic who want to explore the classical texts within a digital environment.
The Rāwī suggests new, innovative ways of integrating large language models into philological work. Its editions and tools were built in a collaboration of human expertise and large language models — Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini. The scholar conceived, planned and designed each edition and tool, set the editorial standards, and reviewed the machine's output. The models read the scanned pages as OCR engines, suggested corrections where they suspected OCR errors, proposed vocalization and glosses, and wrote the software of the environment itself. Rather than a strict division of labor, the work proceeded as a close collaboration, back and forth between scholar and machine — allowing a single scholar to take on projects of a scale otherwise beyond the reach of one person, or even of a small team. The result is a proposed model for the innovative use of AI in preparing scholarly and teaching editions of texts, and for developing tools that will assist scholars in their close analysis of texts.
al-Rāwī al-Raqamī is directed by Yaron Klein (Carleton College). The environment is under development and, for now, restricted in circulation; feedback is warmly welcomed.
I. Digital Editions
The Thousand and One Nights — Calcutta II digital teaching edition
A complete digital edition of the Calcutta II text of the Thousand and One Nights (Macnaghten, Calcutta 1839–42), the fullest and least censored of the Arabic printed editions and the base of Burton's and Lyons's translations. All four volumes are fully vocalized and glossed for readers of Arabic, advanced learners included, with the printed pagination preserved so that the digital text can be read and cited by the printed page. In addition to the edition's own glossary, every word can be looked up with a click in the dictionaries of the environment, and an advanced full-text search runs across the whole edition, in prose and verse modes, with a poetry-analytics mode. It is the first fully vocalized and glossed edition of Calcutta II: a reading text for students, a reference text for scholars, and a curated corpus of vocalized classical Arabic prose and verse. It is also a model for the innovative use of AI and large language models in preparing scholarly and teaching editions of texts.

A digital edition of Kitāb al-aghānī of Abū l-Faraj al-Iṣbahānī (d. 356/967), the great anthology of the Arabic literary heritage that Ibn Khaldūn called dīwān al-ʿArab, the register of the Arabs. It is built around a selection of poems with background anecdotes that shed light on their world, including the poets who composed them and the musicians who set and performed them, together with philological points Abū l-Faraj thought worth glossing. The Reader provides this voluminous text with a live table of contents. It refers to two printed editions, Dār Ṣādir (Beirut) and Dār al-Kutub (Cairo): the text provides citations by volume and page in both. The Reader offers advanced search options: search by keyword or phrase, by root or lemma, and by a taxonomy of recurring motifs. The platform's background dictionary layer provides definitions for every word. The Reader is a beta version, still in development: its text, apparatus and search are being expanded and corrected.

An experiment in machine reading. The 284 pages of one volume of the Aghānī (corresponding to Dār Ṣādir, vol. 5) were read by Anthropic's Claude against a closed schema — a fixed set of eight dimensions: people, music, poetry, setting, affect, learning, objects, nature. The result is an index that can be queried by any combination of these dimensions, cross-tabulated, and mapped across the volume. The tool explores an innovative use of AI: through a tailored tagging of the entire text, composite, multi-layered questions can be put to it, returning results beyond those achieved through Boolean search. The lab is a work in progress.

The digitization of the Arabic textual heritage has been under way for more than three decades. Classical works in every field — religion, history, literature, lexicography, grammar — have been typed, scanned, corrected and put into circulation, first on disc and then online; especially noteworthy among these efforts are al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr (Markaz al-Turāth) and al-Maktaba al-Shāmila. In recent years the Open Islamicate Texts Initiative (OpenITI), led by Sarah Bowen Savant (Aga Khan University), Matthew Thomas Miller (University of Maryland), and Maxim Romanov (Universität Hamburg), has assembled thousands of these texts into a machine-readable corpus, distributed openly through GitHub and Zenodo. OpenITI converted the texts of the digital libraries into a uniform, machine-actionable format with enriched scholarly metadata — the foundation on which corpus-wide search and analysis become possible — and is now extending the corpus through an OCR program of its own. The Rāwī's al-Maktaba al-raqamiyya is based primarily on the OpenITI corpus, and the environment as a whole stands on this cumulative labor — including that of the hundreds of typists and proofreaders, mostly unnamed, who first turned the printed pages into digital text.
Alongside the texts stand the builders of computational instruments for Arabic. The Computational Approaches to Modeling Language (CAMeL) Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi, directed by Nizar Habash, has for years developed tools for Arabic language processing — morphological analysis and disambiguation, diacritization and more — and distributes them as open source (CAMeL Tools). The root and lemma search layer of the Rāwī — across the Maktaba corpus, the Aghānī, and the Calcutta II Nights — was built with the CAMeL Tools morphological analyzer, to which the Rāwī adds its own layers for resolving weak radicals in search. The Qurʾānic text used as a reference in the environment comes from the Tanzil project; the Arabic of the Rāwī’s pages is set in the Amiri typeface, Khaled Hosny’s revival of the Bulaq tradition.
al-Rāwī al-Raqamī, directed by Yaron Klein (Carleton College), builds on these contributions and adds new layers: fully vocalized and glossed editions, prosodic analysis, layered teaching tools, and innovative advanced search features designed for nuanced textual analysis. Its editions and tools were created with AI large language models — Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini — reading scanned pages as OCR engines and proposing text and analysis, combined with human verification, and are offered in the same spirit of cumulative, shared work.
